These Chihuahuas I Love!

Wednesday, February 18, 2009

I'm not really a fan of chihuahuas becaue I find them very noisy, annoying at times, and too aggressive considering their size. But don't get me wrong. I love dogs and I believe all dog breeds are wonderful. It's just that we do have some limits sometimes.

:)

But yesterday I watched "Beverly Hills Chihuahua" on DVD. A friend lent it to me when I said that I was bored at home with nothing much else to do. So she thought a good family movie about pets would be the remedy for my boredom.

And was she right!

I love the movie. It was very entertaining (I find the rat and the iguana the funniest of all) and really teaches some good lessons about friendship and in wanting simple things in life. Oh, and love too.

Drew Barrymore was the perfect choice to voice Chloe. Her voice was sweet and you could really warm up to her especially when she sounded naive with all that was happening around her.

Watch this movie together with your kids. It might make you want to get a chihuahua afterwards.

Vegetarian Dog Food

Sunday, January 25, 2009
I am quite surprised that there is an increase in the demand for vegetarian dog food. I've read about it in the newspaper and it wasn't surprising to know that most of these dog owners are vegetarians themselves.

So is it good to make our pets adapt to our own eating lifestyle?

While I am not so sure about that, all I know is that dogs have always been carnivores and I think that a vegetarian diet wouldn't be good for their health. Feeding them vegetables every now and then is a good idea, but to make them eat veggies all the time, that's a completely different story.

Let dogs be dogs and let us human, be humans stick to what we want to eat.

Michael Vick Chew Toy

Wednesday, January 21, 2009
I am completely against the maltreatment of dogs or any other animals for that matter but I am also kinda sad for what happened to Michael Vick. He's a great athlete. I think he just got into the wrong group of people who influenced him into the dog racing sport, the kind that abuses dogs.

But I have to say, this picture is still irony at its best.

Dogs Catch Yawns From People

Thursday, September 11, 2008

Dogs find human yawns contagious, suggesting they have a rudimentary capacity for empathy.

Although yawning is widespread in many animals, contagious yawning — a yawn triggered by seeing others yawning — has previously only been shown to occur in humans and chimpanzees.

It turns out, however, that man's best friend is highly sensitive to catching human yawns, with 72 percent of 29 dogs tested yawning after observing a person doing so.

Dog Bite Prevention Tips

Tuesday, September 9, 2008

Important dog bite prevention tips:

  • Pick a dog that is good match for your home. Consult your veterinarian for details about the behavior of different breeds.
  • Socialize your pet. Gradually expose your puppy to a variety of people and other animals so it feels at ease in these situations; continue this exposure as your dog gets older.
  • Train your dog. Commands can build a bond of obedience and trust between man and dog. Avoid aggressive games like wrestling or tug-of-war with your dog.
  • Vaccinate your dog against rabies and other diseases.
  • Neuter or spay your dog. These dogs are less likely to bite.
  • Never leave a baby or small child alone with a dog.
  • Teach your child to ask a dog owner for permission before petting any dog.
  • Let a strange dog sniff you or your child before touching it, and pet it gently, avoiding the face, head and tail.
  • Never bother a dog if it is sleeping, eating or caring for puppies.
  • Do not to run past a dog.
  • If a dog threatens you, remain calm. Avoid eye contact. Stand still or back away slowly until the dog leaves. If you are knocked down, curl into a ball and protect your face with your arms and fists.

If bitten, request proof of rabies vaccination from the dog owner, get the owner's name and contact information, and contact the dog's veterinarian to check vaccination records. Then immediately consult with your doctor. Clean bite wound with soup and water as soon as possible. If the attack victim is bleeding from a dog bite, immediately take them to a doctor or emergency room.
